Libary Policies
Access Policies
The library is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for holidays (NRS 2.420). Staff is present only during those hours.
Extended access is based on the requirements of the individual to have access to the courts. Attorneys have a professional requirement to diligently represent their clients and it is recognized that access to the law library beyond the regular public hours is often necessary to meet the demands of their profession. Legislative staff must also meet the demands of the session to research and draft legislation regardless of regular hours. Members of the public who are studying the law or who are anticipating litigation may require access outside of the regularly staffed hours and will be provided reasonable access while there is security present in the building. Those pro se litigants in a criminal case who are actually working towards a court date and pro se litigants in a civil case where a complaint has been filed will be provided access equivalent to that of attorneys until the action has been completed.(O'Connor v. Mowbrary, 504 F. Supp. 139 (1980).
After Hours Use of the law library
Library access when staff is not present is considered a privilege. After-hours users found in violation of stated library policies or of infractions which could compromise the safety of the library and its contents or of other users will be summarily denied further after-hours access, and may have it re-instated only upon successful petition to the court. Petition is by letter to the chief justice, with copies to all justices and the law librarian.
